The Duluth Airport was dedicated in Aug. 1929.  Other sites that were considered were 63 Ave. West, Wheeler Field, and the corner of Map;e Grove and Haines Road.  The current site was the old work farm of 640 acres which the city purchased for $70,000.  The name given to the airport at the dedication was Williamson-Johnson Municipal Airport.  Named after Harvey Williamson Jr., a local commercial aviation pioneer and Lt. Conrad Johnson the first aviator from Duluth killed during the first world war. Zenith Web Site
